Hi Christy,
Thanks again for another informative news letter.

The information on worm casting being recycled
by the worms was most welcome as I have always been afraid of doing this and have probably overfed at times.

Could you possibly put a DIY type diagram or photos of the Aerator on one of your newsletters as I am still trying to fure out the use of the drill bit?

One of your fans in South Africa

Best regards

Amendment to this post. First, the air bubbler stones. They quickly build up bacterial slime and cannot be cleaned. Do not use them. Just bubbling the water through a multi head attachment gizmo will do fine..or make a suitable bubbler with some tubing and a 1/8 inch drill bit.

I apologize if you've already answered this somewhere, but I was wondering about what kind of manure to put in my worm bin. I've been trying to research dog and cat manure in particular. I have read about the dangers of using this in a typical compost system, well as far as using the resulting compost on food gardens that is. I hear its great for lawns and ornamentals. Would processing the poop through a worm compost fix the inherent dangers of using this poop? What would you recommend? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Old newspaper is fine to use. I would only caution you to watch out for spiders. Do your shredding outside and pay attention. I don't know where you live but where I'm from we have a species of spider that is not friendly.

Learning so much from you. I just wondered about shredding old newspaper as opposed to new. I mean like a year old from a shed. Any problem with that?

George,

It is my opinion that the melon rind is sufficient. This is what I use. I rinse the mites off and reuse the melon rind over and over until it begins to decompose. Then I add it to the bin and use a fresh rind, (if the problem still persists). Remember, the mites are a natural inhabitant of the worm bin and only needs to be controlled, not iradicated.

Hi Christy,

I got your info regarding how often to turn but I have got some dreaded red mite that seemed to appear from nowhere. I have used some water melon rind on top of my bedding and then kept it there for about 24hrs and then disposed of it. There seems to be a lot less mites the second or third time around.
Am I doing the correct thing or should I use a little sulphur as I have read in my worm book?

So far your info has been the most effective I have received and thank you again for your time and effort.
Thanks in advance
Best regards
George, in sunny South Africa

Thanks for the information I will reduce my time to a weekly mix up. I find that a three pronged plastic miniature gardening fork is ideal for the task and does not hurt the worms.

Thanks for the info.

Best regards
